Wrestlers on the Hitchcock County/Wauneta-Palisade squad returned from the holiday break in fighting form Saturday, with four members of the team capturing gold medals en route to a top place finish in the team standings.

The HC/WP crew posted 196 team points to edge St. Francis (Kansas) JV at 192 to claim the

Dundy County-Stratton Wrestling Invitational championship trophy.

Stratton, Colo., was third with 168 points and the hosting DCS squad took fourth with 136 points in the 10-team field.

Four HC/WP grapplers topped the competition in their individual weight brackets.

Squad members posting first place finishes included Marcos Ramirez at 119 pounds. Michael Erickson at 130 pounds. Keegan Haarberg at 189 pounds, and Alex Pollmann at 285 pounds.

This marks Pollmann’s first round of competition this year after being sidelined with injuries earlier this season.

Other team members earning points towards the squad’s championship win include Zack Wright, taking second place at 103 pounds.

Keegan Haarberg, at left, continued his strong season for HC/WP wrestling by taking home first place in the 189-pound division at the DCS Invite last Saturday.

Competing at 171 pounds, David Acosta took third place and Will Werner took fourth.

The team was short one key member when they returned to the mats after the holiday break. Assistant Coach Rich Wilson was noticeably absent from his coach’s corner chair. Wilson reports that he has taken a teaching position at Centura Public Schools in Cairo, Neb, and regrettably will no longer be able to assist with the HC/WP wrestling squad this season.

This coming week the team travels to Imperial on Saturday for the Chase County Invite. Action gets underway at 9 a.m. MT/10 a.m. CT.

HC/WP’s Marcos Ramirez looks down at his opponent last Saturday moments before winning the match by pin. Ramirez took first place in the 119-pound division at DCS.

Haarberg remains undefeated going into Saturday’s meet at Imperial.

On Friday, Jan. 21, they will travel to Cambridge for the RPAC Invite, with action slated to get underway at 1:30 p.m. MT/2:30 p.m. CT.

Individual results from Saturday’s DCS Invite were not available for inclusion in this week’s issue of the Breeze.
