The Wauneta Breeze

Like a whirling tornado made up of sneakers and hands, the Wauneta Palisade boys basketball team (11-0) flew by its weekend opponents before they ever knew what hit them.

The Broncos opened up a 27-6 first quarter lead against the Hitchcock County Falcons (4-8) en route to a 79-36 victory in the first game of the season at the Wauneta gymnasium last Friday.

Wau-Pal’s patented full-court press worked like a well-oiled machine against Hitchcock County. The Broncos pursued every Falcon pass with precision and intensity.

The defensive effort led to several easy scores for the Broncs, who rested its starters entering the fourth quarter with a 69-24 lead.

Leading the scoring for WP was Chris Bartels with his game-high 23-point effort. Just as impressive was Drew Harris’ near triple-double, which included 19 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. Previously injured starter Ricky Martin, who was not expected to play over the weekend, returned and scored 9 points and grabbed 6 boards — a good sign for Wau-Pal. Fellow starter Bo Fanning also had 9 points.

Broncos beat Roughriders

In Saturday’s game, which started much like the one the night before, the Broncos got out of the gate quickly and took an early 16-7 lead on the road against Southwest (2-8).

It was the second quarter when Wau-Pal really started cooking. After allowing the first basket of the period, the Broncos ran off 20 unanswered points to get out in front 36-9.

WP did an excellent job jumping passing lanes, as they racked up 22 steals on the night. A total of 28 forced turnovers on the evening led to many easy shots for the Broncs.

Leading the scoring for Wau-Pal was Drew Harris with 19 points, as well as 9 steals. Chris Bartels scored 15 points, while Ricky Martin continued to find his stride, adding 14. Bo Fanning and Jacob Maris each scored 9 points.

Kuhlen confident

Wauneta-Palisade boys Head Coach Dave Kuhlen said he has faith that his team will continue to stay sharp and bring its best performance night-in and night-out, despite a drop in the caliber of teams the Broncos have recently faced.

“No matter what the competition level is, we should always want to play well and execute correctly,” said Kuhlen.

The Broncos last five opponents have a combined 19-36 record this season. WP has beat them by an average margin of 29.2 points per game.

Jayvee team cruises

The Bronco junior varsity boys team knocked off Hitchcock County 30-18 on Friday night at home. On Saturday, WP took out Southwest 32-4.

The jayvee team remains undefeated on the 2010-2011 season.

Upcoming games

The Broncos will play tomorrow (Friday) in Perkins County with the schedule of games differing from those the past several weeks. The Broncos jayvee boys team will travel to play at Madrid, which begins at 4:30 p.m. MT/5:30 p.m. CT — the same time the jayvee girls play in Grant. Following the jayvee games will be varsity girls, then varsity boys. Jayvee players who traveled to Madrid will be available to play in the varsity game later in the evening against Perkins County.

On Saturday, Wau-Pal plays host to Garden County, with a normal start time set for 3 p.m. MT/4 p.m. CT.
