In the two-page article, entitled “On the Road from Imperial to Culbertson” writer and photographer Phil Soreide documents his recent road trip which included stops at the Wauneta and Palisade businesses. While visiting Wauneta Roller Mills, Soreide enjoyed visiting with owner Raymond Maxfield and his son Jim, who serves as miller and general manager. The Maxfields provided Soreide with a quick education on a few of the painstaking processes it takes to produce pure white Wauneta flour. In search of a good restaurant, Soreide headed out to Palisade for a stop at the Pioneer Cafe. While there, he visited with manager Stella Greenlee and learned of the cafe’s ownership by a group of investors who purchased it 10 years ago. After lunch, Soreide stopped in at the Bargain Center, where he discovered “a delightful mix of real collectibles, practical furniture and mere whimsy.” While there, he met owner Bob Topp, who opened the store five years earlier after moving to Palisade from Iowa. Other stops featured in the Road Trip story include the Balcony House bed and breakfast and On Broadway restaurant in Imperial, Enders Reservoir and Bur Oak Canyon south of Culbertson. Nebraskans can read more about Soreide’s trip and view the accompanying photography in the current issue of Nebraska Life Magazine, available on newsstands and by subscription. Nebraska Life publishes six issues a year and began 12 years ago. Family-owned by Christopher Amundson and his wife Angela, more photos and stories from the magazine can be found at www.NebraskaLife.com. |
